Washington County Court Records
Washington County court records are generated as part of the local district court's adjudicative functions to preserve and provide access to case history. Iowa Ct. R. 20.1(2) defines these records as the contents of a court file, including dockets, exhibits, transcripts, judgments, and other related materials in the court clerk's custody.
Individuals may access court records to track cases, find judicial precedents, or pay court fines. The state's judicial branch provides resources for retrieving Iowa court records, which include case documents or files produced in Washington County. However, parties can still contact the local clerk of the court's office to inquire about Washington court records.
Are Court Records Public in Washington County?
Yes. Iowa's Open Records Law allows the general public to view or copy Washington court records. However, specific state statutes, federal regulations, and court rules prevent the disclosure of sensitive or privileged information. For instance, sealed cases, juvenile records, Washington County arrest records included in court files, and adoption filings are generally protected from public access. Only individuals with court permission or having authorization under state or federal law may view protected case information.

Washington County Criminal and Civil Records
Washington County criminal records are created by local law enforcement agencies and courts. To find criminal information produced by police agencies, such as the Washington arrest records, one can approach the relevant local authority. For example, the Sheriff's Office is the county's primary law enforcement body and controls the county jail, where most arrestees are processed and detained. However, members of the public can also contact police departments, such as the Washington City Police Department, for recent arrests made within city boundaries.
At the same time, court files make up the Washington criminal records. Such records include charges, judgments, and sentences. Individuals can visit the Iowa Courts Online website to view criminal case information, including hearing dates, counts, disposition dates, and sentences. One can also contact the county clerk of court's office to inquire about accessing criminal case information and documents.
Civil records, on the other hand, pertain to disputes between individuals and organizations (known as civil cases). Civil actions usually involve equitable relief or financial damages, not criminal prosecutions. However, certain cases, such as adoptions, are procedural and do not involve disputes. Individuals interested in accessing publicly available civil case records can also approach the Washington County Clerk of Court's Office.
Washington County Marriage Records
Couples are required by law (Iowa Code § 595.3) to obtain marriage licenses before being wedded in Iowa. In Washington County, these licenses are obtained from the Washington County Recorder, serve as permissions to conduct weddings, and must be returned once the ceremonies are officiated. Certified copies of marriage certificates are issued after licenses are returned to the recorder. These licenses and certificates are regarded as Washington County marriage records. The Iowa government also refers to marriage documents as vital records.
The Washington County Recorder allows members of the public to inspect any marriage record on site. However, it only provides certified copies of marriage certificates dating back to 1954 to entitled applicants upon request. Entitled parties include people named on the Washington County marriage certificate and their relatives (parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, and siblings). Only records older than 75 years can be provided to the general public.
Any applicant for a certified copy must be 18 or older and must provide a complete notarized application form, a copy of government-issued ID, and a $15 fee (per copy).
Applications can be submitted in person at the recorder's office or mailed to

The Washington County Recorder provides certified copies of Washington County birth records issued from 1880 to date to document county births. - Birth certificates issued from 1921 to 1941
- Records filed one year or more after a person's birth
- Birth records created after legal name changes
Like marriage records, anyone can inspect birth records at the Recorder's office. However, only an entitled person (the registrant or parent named on the certificate and the registrant's children, grandchildren, grandparents, spouse, or siblings) can obtain a certified copy of a Washington County birth certificate. Such individuals must fill out the notarized application form, provide a photocopy of their government ID, and include the $15 per copy fee.
Alternatively, an entitled applicant can use the request methods provided by the Iowa Vital Records Office to order a Washington County birth certificate. The department offers most records not available through the Recorder's office, such as delayed records, certificates from 1922 to 1941, and records issued after name changes.
